Last week marked the beginning of the Chinese New Year and we were there to capture the annual celebration at the Mandarin Oriental Boston. To welcome the Year of the Earth Dog, the venue greeted guests for their annual soiree in style. The Mandarin lobby was filled with traditional red and gold Chinese lanterns and live music. The entrance to the ballroom included a traditional fortune tree, Red Lotus cocktail from Bar Boulud and personalized painted New Year wishes. As a surprise to guests, a traditional Lion Dance was performed by a local martial arts studio and Mandarin Oriental Hotel General Manager Philipp Knuepfer offered an official welcome to the New Year.

Thank you to the team at the Mandarin Oriental Boston for welcoming us back again this year to share in the celebration!

It’s officially wedding planning season and with that comes new issues of all of our favorite magazines on newsstands. We are excited to see the real wedding of Ashley and Brian in the latest issue of Boston Weddings Magazine.

Story by: Jule Suratt – “When the bride-to-be Ashley Swafford was searching for a photographer to capture her wedding to fiancé Brian Petruzzelli, she had just one request: a portrait in the middle of Boylston Street. “If you can make that happen,” she told shutterbug Jill Person, “you’re my girl.”

Ashley had always felt a strong connection to New England, but living in Las Vegas, it was hard to find someone who shared her affinity for the region. So when she met Brian at a mutual friend’s party, she instantly connected with the Dedham native. “He had that Boston swagger about him,” she says. “He was a tough guy with a soft side.”

A year and a half after they started dating, Ashley, who travels frequently for work, was grounded by a massive snowstorm in Springfield, Missouri. She eventually got back to Las Vegas – 12 hours later. Brian met her at the airport holding flowers. “I used to joke that the airport was the only place I could see her, that had to catch her either coming or going,” he says. So he did, getting down on one knee and proposing before a crowd. “I said yes.” says Ashley, “once I caught my breath. It was magical.”

Thank you to Boston Weddings for featuring this beautiful wedding and to Eric Czerlonka and his team at Czerlonka Event Design & Management for sending this lovely couple our way.

Thank you to this A-team for creating the wedding of Ashley and Brian’s dreams that we were able to capture:

Venue: Mandarin Oriental Hotel Boston; Planning and Coordination: Czerlonka Event Design & Management; Flowers: Marc Hall Design; Lighting: Suzanne B. Lowell Lighting Design; Band: Night Shift Entertainment – Soho; Bride’s Dress: Vera Wang; Inbal Dror, Blush Bridal (reception); Calligraphy: Suzanne Telage; Invitations: Shopannabelle’s; Hair: Escape Salon Aveda; Makeup: Chanel, Saks Fifth Avenue; Menswear: Tom Ford; Officiant: Father Kevin O’Leary – Cathedral of the Holy Cross; Rentals: Luxe Event Rentals; Wedding Bands: Tiffany & Co.

Ashley and Brian chose the Mandarin Oriental Boston for their recent destination wedding. The couple who live in Nevada hired local Boston designer  Eric Czerlonka of Czerlonka Event Design and Management to help bring their vision to life. The ceremony took place at The Cathedral of the Holy Cross followed by cocktail hour in the courtyard of the Mandarin. For the reception, the Oriental Ballroom was transformed by the talented team at the Mandarin, Eric and his team as well as the Marc Hall Design and Suzanne B. Lowell Lighting Design teams.

From Ashley and Brian – “Planning a destination wedding is as exciting as it is complex.  The single most important factor in its success is having expert and visionary people on your team who are trained in providing first class service at every entry point. The wedding day was chic and magical in every aspect, from the architectural flowers cascading on the tables to the modern décor.  With photos galore, we will always remember stopping traffic on Boylston Street for the perfect shot.  Sharing this most special day with our family and friends will hold a lifetime of memories.”

Eric worked with Ashley on helping to bring her vision to life for the reception. “Our goal was to create a room that was modern, sleek and sophisticated with a warm romantic feel.  We achieved this be setting the space with a combination of square mirrored tables and 36 foot long rectangular tables covered in custom silk linen.  The clean straight lines were softened with shades of white accents.  The room was was transformed by the magnificent contrasting tables installations created by Marc Hall Design and Suzanne B. Lowell Lighting Design lit the room perfectly bring all the pieces to life.”

Congratulations again Ashley and Brian and thank you for having us there to capture your beautiful destination wedding day here in New England! A big thank you as well do Donna and the team at the Mandarin, Eric and his team and to all of those who helped make this day so perfect for the newlyweds.

Katherine and Andrew knew they wanted a sophisticated and elegant black tie wedding from the day they got engaged. They chose the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in the Back Bay for their summer wedding.

Design, decor and coordination of Katherine and Andrew’s vision was brought to fruition by the team at Hopple Popple, Inc and was even more beautiful than they had envisioned. Echoed in the dance floor, coordinated yet unique bridesmaids dresses, and the floral design by Winston Flowers (with regal pops of red), a color palette of black and white paired nicely with the black tie celebration.

Their emotional first look took place outside in the private courtyard of the hotel which also made for a perfect backdrop for photographs with the couple’s family and friends. The Mandarin Ballroom was transformed for the ceremony with floor to ceiling white drapes and accented with 2 stunning floral arrangements created by Winston Flowers at the beginning of the aisle. Katherine and Andrew exchanged their vows in a traditional Jewish ceremony under a beautiful floral chuppah.

A combination of rectangular mirrored tables mixed with classic rounds blended perfectly for the reception and were topped with an array of white flowers and candlelight. Following dinner, the newlyweds and their guests enjoyed the evening on dance floor with music from Night Shift Entertainment.

A big thank you to the team at the Mandarin and to Linda Matzkin and her team at Hopple Popple for a wonderful day! Congratulations Katherine and Andrew and thank you for choosing us to document your wedding!

Alyssa and Ryan chose the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Boston to celebrate their wedding day this January. We started off the afternoon with Alyssa and her bridesmaids who got ready at the hotel while Ryan and his groomsmen walked over to The Art of Shaving on Newbury Street for old fashioned shaves. The bride and groom opted for their first look on the grand staircase. A little cold was not going to stop the couple from heading over to the Commonwealth Avenue Mall for a few photographs before meeting up with the wedding party for formal photos around the hotel. We love that the Mandarin has so many great locations for photos and were able to utilize several of these spaces with the couple prior to their ceremony.

Before walking down the isle, the couple signed the Ketubah alongside immediate family and wedding party. Following the traditional Jewish ceremony that took place in the ballroom, the newlyweds and their guests enjoyed cocktail hour while the room was transformed. Alyssa and Ryan wanted their wedding to reflect the look and style of the venue with a wintery feel. Navy, silver, gold and ivory colors were used throughout the various decor along with candle light and white centerpieces.

Before the couple could even be introduced, Beantown had all of the guests up on their feet dancing. Following the first dance, hora and toasts, the band got everyone back up dancing for the rest of the evening celebration. A big congratulations to Alyssa and Ryan and thank you for being so much fun to work with on your beautiful wedding day and to the amazing team at the Mandarin for always being so fantastic to work with!

When it came time to select the perfect place for their Boston Wedding, Jamie and Eric chose The Mandarin Oriental Hotel. This classic elegance meets traditional celebration took place this Fall at the Back Bay venue.

The bride got ready in the Beijing Room at the Mandarin with her family and bridesmaids. From there, they all headed outside to make the most of the natural light for formals and Jamie and Eric’s first look. The lavender and ivory bouquets were a perfect compliment to the deep purple bridesmaids dresses and the bride’s stunning Monique Lhuillier strapless wedding gown.

Prior to the ceremony, Jamie, Eric and their close family and friends joined in the traditional signing of the Ketubah before walking down the isle.  The couple’s traditional Jewish ceremony took place in the ballroom of the Mandarin with a perfect blend of oriental luxury and Bostonian style. All eyes were on the couple as they stood beneath the floral chuppah accented with warm lighting.  Following the ceremony guests headed to the foyer for cocktail hour while the space was transformed.

The ballroom was lit perfectly with white candles and pink and purple lighting that accentuated the decor. Following the first dance and lively hora, Jamie and Eric along with their guests, enjoyed dancing to the sounds of the Eye To Eye Band. A big thank you to the entire team at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Boston and Congratulations Jamie and Eric!

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Boston Wedding of Jamie + Eric – Photographed by Person + Killian Photography – 251 Newbury Street – Boston, MA 02116 – 617.236.1662

Jamie and Ben wanted their beautiful Boston wedding to be classic, modern, and feel like an elegant and glamorous party for all of their friends and family to enjoy! They chose traditional colors of black and white, and had a fantastic team of local Boston wedding professionals to help bring their vision to life. They chose the Mandarin Oriental Boston right in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay for the days events — the perfect venue for everything from the morning preparations through to the after party.

We started the morning with Jamie and her bridesmaids as they got ready for the big day at the Mandarin Oriental Boston. Each bridesmaid (plus Jamie and Ben’s moms) had a personalized white bathrobe embroidered with their initials. The ladies helped Jamie button up into her beautiful Judd Waddell wedding gown. The Mandarin Oriental’s outdoor garden was the perfect location to have their traditional first look. We also spent some time inside with Jamie + Ben, getting a few pre-wedding photos in the Mandarin Oriental Boston’s many beautiful indoor spaces, before being joined by close friends and family for formals.

Jamie + Ben signed their wedding Ketubah, before beginning the wedding ceremony in the Mandarin Oriental Boston Ballroom. William Mizuta Private Florist provided the gorgeous chuppah that the happy couple were married under, wrapped in white fabric and accented with beautiful white flowers.  Jamie + Ben wanted to pay homage to the Mandarin Oriental’s Asian influences during their cocktail hour, so guests enjoyed a fabulous sushi station manned by a live sushi chef as part of their hors d’oeuvres!

The Mandarin Oriental Boston Ballroom was transformed into a gorgeous reception space. The decor complimented the Ballroom’s natural golden light, with a mix of submerged florals and beautiful white arrangements illuminated by candle light on each of the tabletops. The golden ballroom chairs were matched with textured golden charger plates, and the white chuppah remained in the corner to house the stunning  four-tiered black and white wedding cake. The party kicked off with the first dance and traditional Hora, and DJ Mike Amado kept everyone dancing all night!

Special thanks to Jamie + Ben for sharing your beautiful wedding day with us, and to the entire team at the Mandarin Oriental Boston for a flawless (and fun!) event. Congratulations!

It’s not often that one of our couples gets to have two weddings! Person + Killian was excited to be able to photograph the Mandarin Oriental Boston Wedding of Stephanie and Ben this New Year’s Eve – for the second time! Stephanie and Ben celebrated their first wedding back in November of 2011, before Ben was deployed for military service. The couple’s ceremony was very small and private, followed by an intimate dinner reception for family at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in downtown Boston. Over a year later, we were back at the Mandarin with the newlyweds for the big wedding celebration they had always dreamed of!

After wearing a simple and elegant white dress for her first wedding ceremony, this time around Stephanie opted for a gorgeous Sophia Tolli design called “Jewel” – featuring a striking teal bodice and silver beading around the waist. The couple had their traditional first look on the stairs inside the Mandarin Oriental, before beginning the late-evening renewal ceremony in the Oriental Ballroom. Following the ceremony and cocktails in the Oriental Gallery, the Ballroom was transformed into beautiful reception space fit for a New Year’s Eve party!

The tables were covered in classic linens, with sparkling crystal candle holders surrounding tall crystal centerpieces reminiscent of the famous ball that would soon drop in Time’s Square! The bride herself handmade the gorgeous escort cards, as well as ribbon-wrapped mint tins for favors, and the folded paper flowers to top her wedding cake, adding an elegant DIY touch to the ballroom reception. The groom was even surprised with his own custom-made grooms cake, decorated to honor his recent military service. As the clock ticked towards midnight, the bride changed into a second dress covered in blue and silver crystals to ring in the New Year in style.

We had a blast sharing our New Year celebration with Stephanie and Ben, congratulations to the happy couple!

Emily and Dustin celebrated their Mandarin Oriental Boston wedding on a beautiful (and blustery!) day right in downtown Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood.

The couple took advantage of the great outdoor space, having their traditional “first look” in the Mandarin’s Courtyard. We were able to get some great photographs with the bride and groom outside, despite all the wind, before moving inside the hotel for some formals.

The couple had a beautiful traditional Jewish ceremony, followed by a stunning reception in the Mandarin’s ballroom. Emily & Dustin’s wedding was classic, traditional, and very elegant — a simple color palette of steel grey and white was made very warm and intimate with lots of soft lighting, giving the room a candlelit glow. As always Florist William Mizuta designed gorgeous arrangements for the event and each table was accented with warm pinspot lighting, thanks to the team at Suzanne B. Lowell Lighting. We loved being able to capture this great couple on their wedding day, congratulations Emily and Dustin and thank you for choosing Person + Killian Photography!

Lindsay and Benjamin proved you can still have a beautiful summer wedding, even on a windy, stormy weekend in Boston!

Lucky for us the getting ready photographs, ceremony, cocktails and reception all take place at the same venue, one of our favorite venues the Mandarin Oriental Boston.

Before the storm rolled in we got to take some photographs in the outdoor Sitting Grove, then we moved inside to utilize some of the great indoor locations. Lindsay and Benjamin took full advantage of the beautiful spaces at the Mandarin Oriental, with both their traditional Jewish ceremony and evening reception taking place in the Ballroom.

Lindsay and Ben wanted their Mandarin Oriental Boston Wedding to be soft and romantic. The Ballroom itself was kept fairly dark, for both the ceremony and reception, with a focus on soft candlelight and gorgeous purple uplighting for a really intimate atmosphere. The Huppah was adorned with a beautiful white cloth from Lindsay’s great-grandmother, adding a personal touch to the ceremony. White flowers and candles kept the reception simple, subtle, and romantic. Even though the decor was soft, the crowd was ready to party! Lindsay and Benjamin celebrated the night away surrounded by friends and loved ones.

Thank you Lindsay and Benjamin, and congratulations on a beautiful wedding!

Person + Killian love photographing weddings at our Back Bay neighboring hotel – the Mandarin Oriental Boston. Recently, we had the pleasure of capturing the wedding day of Alyx and Drew there.

The bride and groom started the day early, getting dressed and ready in the rooms of the hotel. A pre-wedding gift of diamond earrings arrived at the bridal suite from Drew before Alyx had even gotten her dress on! After everyone was dressed and ready to go, the couple took advantage of the summer weather and had their first look outside in the Mandarin’s outdoor Sitting Grove. We took some great shots of the couple alone, before they were joined by their wedding party for some group formals. Following the group photos, we moved inside with the couple for photographs of the Mandarin’s beautiful indoor spaces before the ceremony.

The interfaith ceremony took place in the Ballroom, with both a Reverend and a Rabbi officiating. After the “I do”s, the party kicked off in the Oriental Gallery for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The look and feel of the ballroom reception was both classic and modern — gold place settings on white linens, with alternating tall and short white floral centerpieces on all the tables. The crowd was energetic, fun, and definitely ready to celebrate this great couple!

Congratulations Alyx and Drew, and thanks for being so fun to work with on your wedding day!

Person + Killian Photography recently captured the wedding of Caitlin and Jeff at the Mandarin Oriental Boston. The first look for the bride and groom took place in the private outdoor Sitting Grove just outside the hotel followed by some fun and casual photos of the wedding party. The couple celebrated with a traditional Jewish ceremony in the Oriental Ballroom after their Ketubah signing.

The reception was inspired by Caitlin’s favorite colors (red and purple) and a touch of the couple’s hometown tradition that they incorporated in the table names.

After dinner, dancing and cake cutting, the dance floor was officially opened with the Hora. Thank you to Caitlin and Jeff for being so fun to work with and congratulations on a beautiful wedding day!
